Acme Hotel Preservation

Located in the heart of downtown Billings, the preservation of the Acme Building is the first of several projects aimed at increasing the number of downtown residential units. After an initial feasibility study, we were retained by homeWORD to provide evaluation and preparation of design, construction documents, bidding, construction administration and historic preservation support services for the rehabilitation of the historic Acme Hotel into affordable housing. Research and documentation for a successful listing on the National Register for Historic Places was completed, and we also assisted the owner with certifiable Tax Credit renovation efforts as well as Historic Tax Grants. A series of public meetings were held to focus the program and seek input from potential tenants. Documents were submitted to the state Historic Preservation Office. Construction was completed in 2004 and the building is now providing housing to low income families.

This project was focused on the use of alternative energy sources and conservation measures, including the largest photovoltaic array in the state of Montana. This project includes the use of sustainable materials such as certified lumber and cabinets and trim from wheat board panels. The design includes advanced energy conservation measures, including the use of solar panels on the roof. The interior design will preserve the historic character of the hotel while reorganizing the units into larger rentable configurations.
